This week was about assignments. We had to present on the two genres for our films the silent and sound that I mentioned earlier. My group, after the presentation had more work to be done on our production.  Another assignment was a sound design assignment that was given to us to film a 4 minute video about a couple walking that was attacked by a villain, and adding sound effects to it, and it should be night setting. I was the villain in the film.

The assignment was to film in groups and edit in pairs. My group had about 8 persons. My partner and I had a problem editing this because we shot the video in the day and was to change it tonight. Any way we did our best and I learnt that if you’re going to shoot at day for night, NEVER SHOOT THE SKY.

A pic of me running in the film.

This week, I learned about Mise-en-scene, and to watch the movie “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”, write about the mise-en-scene in it.

Mise en scene “is a French word that literally means “placing on stage”. It is the arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a film. Basically it’s the visual design of a film”. LeShante Tennant

“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” “It is about a scientist by the name of Caligari who uses and abuses his power to manipulate a somnambulist by the name of Cesare to kill people. But as the view as we watch the film we realize that the entire story of the film is a story from a crazy man`s perspective by the name of Francis who made it up in his mind.” LeShante Tennant

WEEK 4 ( Sound Design) Wall-E

This week in class we talked about sound designs. What it include?   What I got from the discussion is that “Sound design is the process of creating, manipulating and generating sounds. Sound tell stories, it evokes emotions. It is also used to enhance the story effects of a movie, play, Tv show, video games etc. These sounds are created by sound designer.”

As it relates to what it include?  “Sound design includes mixes from different audios, foley etc. I think what qualifies as sound design is how it evokes emotions. They are created by software programs such as Alchemy, Reaktor and Logic’s Sculpture”.

We were asked to watch Wall-E and answer the following questions as an assignment and send it in.

  1. What did you observe about the sound design in Wall-E?
    1. Did it work to make the story/ watching experience believable?
    2. How did it make you feel? (what contributed to that)?

Lars and the Real Girl

This week I went to class a bit late. When I reached we watched a movie call “Lars and the real girl” starring Ryan Gosling about “A delusional young guy strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet.” IMBD The movie showed us what makes a drama a drama. The lightning, the shots the angles, the music all brought out the drama genre. I must admit the show was kind of silly but there were parts that made me laugh.

We also edited a 15 minute video in Premiere pro to 5 minutes.

So this week is the presentation of our recce on our horror film. Let me just spare you the detail and just say, my group members and I have to do it over.  back.  Anyways we learnt about submixes in Adobe Premiere Pro. A submix is a track that combines audio signals routed to it from specific audio tracks or track sends in the same sequence. Submixes is use to speed up your edits and get greater clip consistency.

In a PowerPoint presentation my lecturer sent me this:

How to create a submixes

  • Go to audio mixer
  • Click drop down triangle to left of mixing channels
  • This displays the Effects And Sends panels in the Audio Track Mixer.
  • Click the Show/Hide Effects And Sends triangle at the left of the Audio Track Mixer.
  • Choose an audio track and the type of submix to create.
  • This can be Mono,Stereo,Stereo5.1 or Adaptaive

Semester 2

So, the Christmas break is over which means school is now in session. First week of school and I must say am not too excited, due to the fact that I wanted another month of holiday. So last semester I documented what I`ve been learning for weeks and this year is no exception. I did part 3 to Communication studio last semester and this semester we have part 4.

My lecturer started the class by showing us our documentary work from last semesters. She highlighted my group strengthens and weaknesses. With that being out of the way, the class then started on a new journey. I learnt about genres. What are genres? And the different types of genres. I was even informed that cartoon and animation are not genres. I know, your surprise but they aren’t.

During the middle of the class, my lecturer place the entire class in four (4) groups. Each group got a genre assigned to it. Am in group 1 and my group got horror. So the task is to create two films, one horror and the other in whatever genre my group decide on. One which should be a silent film. One should last for 2 minutes and the other 5 minutes.
